LPN to ASN
The ASN program prepares graduates for entry-level practice as nurse generalists. By becoming an RN, you can expand your career options and job opportunities, increase your income above your current LPN salary by as much as 40 percent and, most importantly, expand your knowledge and skill as a nurse.
In the USF Crown Point program, you will learn to value service and further develop caring behaviors in clinical practice by recognizing, responding and valuing caring as the foundation for the profession of nursing. The nursing roles of provider of care, manager of care and active member of the discipline will be emphasized as you progress through the curriculum.
You will learn to integrate concepts from physical, social and behavioral sciences and humanities with nursing knowledge and evidence-based practice. Using the nursing process as a critical thinking framework, you will provide safe, accurate and individualized nursing care to select individuals and groups with health needs or common well-defined health problems.
You will care for a variety of patient populations across the life span and health care continuum in acute care, long-term care and community-based settings.
After completing the degree, you will be eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
You will receive 10 hours of nursing credit for your previous LPN education. Content areas of fundamentals of nursing, medical-surgical nursing and maternal nursing are included in the transfer credit.
Credit for general education courses may transfer from your LPN program. Only courses with a “C” or better are considered for transfer. Science and pharmacology courses more than five years old are not accepted for transfer credit.
The USF Crown Point Nursing Resource Center offers excellent learning resources. The School of Health Sciences Simulation Lab provides simulated experiences to facilitate the mastery of health care skills using adult and pediatric human patient simulators. You will have the opportunity to provide health care during simulated clinical experiences.
Live feed and video playback of experiences are available in the Debriefing Room.
In order to participate in clinical experiences, clinical requirements as set by the Department of Nursing and clinical agencies must be met including, but not limited to, criminal background checks and drug testing.
External Assessment Program
The Department of Nursing uses a system of external assessment and remediation for pre-licensure students. All pre-licensure students purchase a designated testing package upon enrollment in the first nursing course. The primary purpose is to help prepare you for NCLEX-RN success. Testing results are also used to evaluate course outcomes.
As a pre-licensure student, you will be required to complete designated tests including content mastery assessments at specified points in the curriculum. Additionally, a nationally normed comprehensive examination designed to predict success on the NCLEX-RN will be administered during the final clinical nursing course. You must achieve a designated satisfactory score on the comprehensive examination in order to meet course requirements.
